The hull pertains to the outer section of all the cargo and equipment. It is especially designed to glide in the water with as little friction as possible so as to reduce the amount of drag. Whatever the size or shape of the boat or yacht, it has two similar ends, which are the bow or the front part and the stern or the back part.
 
Sailing boats have improved a lot with all the latest designs and gadgets, but the basic design of having a steering wheel remains the same. The wheel allows the boat to navigate in the water and change direction.  The very basic design shows the tiller attached to the rudder. The tiller refers to the lengthy straight rod like implement with a pivot point that makes the rod move sideways. The rudder responds to the movement in order to change course underwater.
 
The mast pertains to the big stationary pole located at mid-section. The primary wind catcher is the mainsail, which makes the sailing boat move forward in the water. These are how boats are made in the old days before engines were invented. Wind powers the boats and the sailors make full use of it. The mainsail is attached to the mast vertically as well as to the boom horizontally. The boom moves from side to side to catch the wind and moves the vessel to the direction it wishes to take. The smaller sail that is fixed to just one position aids in adding power by also catching the wind.
 
Last but not the least in the crucial components of a sailing boat is the keel. It is a flat object that is submerged deep into the water to provide balance to the boat and helps it from toppling over in rough seas especially when there is a storm. Sailors keep watch of the depth of the water so as to protect the keel from being damaged.
 
In the past, experienced sailors can easily accelerate at 5 to 7 knots with a sailing boat measuring 30 feet. Naturally, a racing yacht is a lot faster but it all depends on the size and design of the vessel. Whether racing or not, sailing offers a unique adventure and often matched with some game fishing.
